The Ottoman Sultan has commissioned an illustrated book to celebrate the power of his empire, and he has ordered that the paintings employ the techniques of the Italian Renaissance, in which the use of perspective and shadow create realistic portraits that are quite different from the stylized representations of Islamic tradition. These tensions center around different theories of art. Covering a period of about a week, it is at once a murder mystery, a love story, and an examination of the cultural tensions between East and West. Set in Istanbul, the capital city of the powerful Ottoman Empire, in 1591, the novel functions at many different levels. My Name Is Red is a novel by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2006.
